A dog being a dog

Usually fine

Why does my dog smell so bad?

It's almost never just 'they need a bath.' Common real causes: ears, anal glands, skin issues, breath, or wet fur. Bathing more is usually the wrong fix.

The Dog Dad By The Dog Dad · Dad to Rex, Luna, Milo & Tank
Luna started smelling musty no matter how often we bathed her. Turned out it was a yeast infection in her ears, not her coat. One vet visit, two weeks of ear drops, smell gone.

What's actually causing it

The 7 most common causes.

  1. Ear infection (yeast or bacterial)

Very common. Sweet, musty, yeasty smell often comes from infected ears, not the coat. Floppy-eared breeds (Goldens, Cockers, Basset Hounds) are most prone.

  2. Anal gland issues

A fishy, strong, distinctive smell. The glands are leaking or impacted. See the [scoot guide](/blog/why-dog-scooting-butt-on-floor/) for details.

  3. Skin allergies or yeast

Yeast overgrowth on the skin produces a corn-chip or stale-bread smell. Often paired with itching, especially of the paws or belly.

  4. Dental disease

Bad breath that smells like rotting food = significant dental disease. Bacteria from the mouth can also affect overall body odor.

  5. Wet fur and undercoat

If they're not dried properly after bathing or swimming, the trapped moisture in the undercoat breeds bacteria. Smelly within 24 hours.

  6. Diet

Low-quality food with cheap protein sources can make body odor worse. Switching to a higher-quality diet often improves smell within 6-8 weeks.

  7. Skin folds (brachycephalic breeds)

Bulldogs, Pugs, Shar Peis have folds that trap moisture, food, and bacteria. Need daily cleaning to prevent smell and infection.

Red flags

When to actually worry.

Practical steps

What to actually do.

  1. Sniff their ears specifically. If they smell sweet or yeasty, vet visit.

  2. Check anal glands — if there's a strong fishy smell, get them expressed.

  3. Check the mouth for tartar buildup and red gums.

  4. Dry them THOROUGHLY after any bath or swim. Microfiber towel + cool air from a hairdryer.

  5. Don't just bathe more — see my [full dog smell guide](/blog/dog-smells-bad-after-bath/) for the actual fix.
