A dog being a dog

Sometimes serious

Why is my dog shaking?

Could be cold, fear, excitement, pain, or illness. Context tells you which. Sudden shaking with other symptoms is the one to take seriously.

The Dog Dad By The Dog Dad · Dad to Rex, Luna, Milo & Tank
Tank shook on every car ride for the first year I owned him. Pure anxiety. Same dog, four years later, doesn't shake at all. Cause matters more than the shake itself.

What's actually causing it

The 7 most common causes.

  1. Cold

Especially for small or short-coated dogs. Dachshunds, Chihuahuas, Pit Bulls all shiver in cold weather. Body temperature drops faster than in larger breeds.

  2. Fear or anxiety

Thunderstorms, fireworks, car rides, vet visits. Stress hormones cause involuntary muscle tremors. Often paired with panting, pacing, hiding.

  3. Excitement

Some dogs shake when they're excited — meeting you at the door, anticipating food, before a walk. Happy shaking. Tail usually wagging.

  4. Pain

Hidden pain (back issues, abdominal pain, joint problems) often shows as shaking. Especially in dachshunds, where IVDD presents as shivering plus a hunched posture.

  5. Old age (tremors)

Senior dogs sometimes develop benign tremors in their head or hind legs. Usually not dangerous but worth a vet check the first time.

  6. Toxin exposure

Poisoning (chocolate, xylitol, certain plants, antifreeze) often causes tremors as an early symptom. This is an emergency.

  7. Generalized Tremor Syndrome

Also called 'shaker syndrome,' more common in small white breeds (Westies, Maltese, Bichons). Treatable but needs vet diagnosis.

When to actually worry.

Practical steps

What to actually do.

  1. Rule out cold first: warm them up with a blanket and see if it stops.

  2. Rule out fear: remove the trigger if you can identify it.

  3. Check their last few hours: any access to chocolate, grapes, xylitol, medications, plants?

  4. If shaking persists more than 30 minutes with no clear cause, call your vet.

  5. For chronic anxiety shakes, see my [pit bull car anxiety guide](/blog/pit-bull-car-anxiety/) — the techniques work for any fearful dog.
