Luna eats grass on every walk. I asked the vet about it for two years before he finally said, 'She just likes grass. Stop overthinking it.' He was right.
What's actually causing it
The 4 most common causes.
-
They like the taste or texture
The most common reason. Dogs are opportunistic foragers. Wet grass after rain is especially appealing because of the moisture and the fresh smell.
-
Mild stomach upset
Some dogs eat grass to induce vomiting when something disagrees with them. If they throw up shortly after, this was probably the cause. The grass itself isn't the cure, it's just the trigger.
-
Boredom or anxiety
Under-exercised or under-stimulated dogs sometimes munch grass as a self-soothing behavior. If grass-eating spikes when you've skipped walks, that's the sign.
-
Missing nutrients (rare)
Less common than people think. Modern dog food covers nutritional bases. If you suspect a deficiency, ask your vet, but don't assume.
Red flags
When to actually worry.
- ·Eating grass that's been recently treated with pesticide, weed killer, or fertilizer
- ·Eating large clumps repeatedly throughout the day
- ·Grass-eating paired with vomiting blood, lethargy, or bloating
- ·New behavior in a senior dog who never did it before
Practical steps
What to actually do.
-
Make sure your yard (and walking routes) aren't recently chemically treated. Wait 48 hours after treatment.
-
If your dog eats grass and immediately vomits, that's a digestive cue. Watch what they ate in the prior 12 hours.
-
Add more exercise and mental stimulation if you suspect boredom. A 15-minute puzzle feeder session burns more energy than a 30-minute walk.
-
Most cases: relax. It's normal dog behavior. Tell the vet at the next routine check-up.
Sunday letter
One honest review. Every Sunday.
Plus the occasional photo of Rex destroying something he wasn't supposed to. About 400 words. Skip a week and I'll understand.
