Rex eats grass and immediately throws it up about once a month. Doesn't worry me. The time Tank threw up six times in two hours after getting into the trash — that was a vet trip.
What's actually causing it
The 8 most common causes.
-
Ate too fast
Common in fast eaters. Food comes back up undigested within minutes. A [slow feeder bowl](/blog/slow-feeder-bowl-worth-it/) fixes this completely for most dogs.
-
Dietary indiscretion (ate something weird)
Garbage, dead animals, a piece of stick, table scraps. The body rejects it. One vomit, then they're fine = usually this.
-
Food intolerance or new food
Switched foods recently? Vomiting 12-24 hours after a new food often means intolerance. Transition slowly over 7 days.
-
Bilious vomiting (empty stomach)
Yellow foam in the morning before breakfast = stomach acid built up overnight. Common in dogs fed once a day. Splitting meals into two usually fixes it.
-
Pancreatitis
Often triggered by a single fatty meal. Symptoms: repeated vomiting, lethargy, hunched posture, painful belly. Common in Dachshunds and other prone breeds. Vet visit needed.
-
Foreign object (blockage)
Swallowed a sock, toy, bone fragment. Vomiting is the body trying to clear it. If repeated and they can't keep water down, emergency surgery may be needed.
-
Toxin ingestion
Chocolate, grapes, xylitol, medications, certain plants. Vomiting is often the first symptom. See [our food safety guide](/can-dogs-eat/).
-
Infection or virus
Parvovirus, giardia, parasites. Usually paired with diarrhea and lethargy. Puppies especially vulnerable.
Red flags
When to actually worry.
- ·More than 2-3 vomits in a few hours
- ·Vomit contains blood (bright red or coffee-ground brown)
- ·Vomiting + diarrhea + lethargy (especially in puppies)
- ·Distended belly, unproductive retching (possible bloat — emergency)
- ·Can't keep water down for more than 12 hours
- ·Suspected toxin or foreign object ingestion
Practical steps
What to actually do.
-
One isolated vomit, dog seems fine: withhold food for 12 hours, then offer small bland meal (boiled chicken + rice). Resume normal feeding the next day.
-
For fast-eater vomiting, get a [silicone slow feeder bowl](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=silicone+slow+feeder+dog+bowl&tag=mesurajpandey-20). Fixes the problem in 90% of cases.
-
For morning bilious vomiting, feed two smaller meals instead of one.
-
For deep-chested breeds, check for [bloat symptoms](https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/health/bloat-in-dogs/) — distended abdomen + unsuccessful retching = emergency vet immediately.
Sunday letter
One honest review. Every Sunday.
Plus the occasional photo of Rex destroying something he wasn't supposed to. About 400 words. Skip a week and I'll understand.
