A dog being a dog

Sometimes serious

Why is my dog throwing up?

One isolated vomit is usually fine. Repeated vomiting, vomiting blood, or vomiting with other symptoms needs a vet. The contents tell you a lot.

Rex eats grass and immediately throws it up about once a month. Doesn't worry me. The time Tank threw up six times in two hours after getting into the trash — that was a vet trip.

What's actually causing it

The 8 most common causes.

  1. Ate too fast

Common in fast eaters. Food comes back up undigested within minutes. A [slow feeder bowl](/blog/slow-feeder-bowl-worth-it/) fixes this completely for most dogs.

  2. Dietary indiscretion (ate something weird)

Garbage, dead animals, a piece of stick, table scraps. The body rejects it. One vomit, then they're fine = usually this.

  3. Food intolerance or new food

Switched foods recently? Vomiting 12-24 hours after a new food often means intolerance. Transition slowly over 7 days.

  4. Bilious vomiting (empty stomach)

Yellow foam in the morning before breakfast = stomach acid built up overnight. Common in dogs fed once a day. Splitting meals into two usually fixes it.

  5. Pancreatitis

Often triggered by a single fatty meal. Symptoms: repeated vomiting, lethargy, hunched posture, painful belly. Common in Dachshunds and other prone breeds. Vet visit needed.

  6. Foreign object (blockage)

Swallowed a sock, toy, bone fragment. Vomiting is the body trying to clear it. If repeated and they can't keep water down, emergency surgery may be needed.

  7. Toxin ingestion

Chocolate, grapes, xylitol, medications, certain plants. Vomiting is often the first symptom. See [our food safety guide](/can-dogs-eat/).

  8. Infection or virus

Parvovirus, giardia, parasites. Usually paired with diarrhea and lethargy. Puppies especially vulnerable.

When to actually worry.

Practical steps

What to actually do.

  1. One isolated vomit, dog seems fine: withhold food for 12 hours, then offer small bland meal (boiled chicken + rice). Resume normal feeding the next day.

  2. For fast-eater vomiting, get a [silicone slow feeder bowl](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=silicone+slow+feeder+dog+bowl&tag=mesurajpandey-20). Fixes the problem in 90% of cases.

  3. For morning bilious vomiting, feed two smaller meals instead of one.

  4. For deep-chested breeds, check for [bloat symptoms](https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/health/bloat-in-dogs/) — distended abdomen + unsuccessful retching = emergency vet immediately.
